Biography:

Emma Jamison was born, lives and works in rural West Sussex, at the foot of the South Downs. Her studio is adjacent to the Hitchens ‘bolthole’ Greenleaves where Ivon Hitchens set up his studio. John Hitchens a close family friend has been an informal mentor to Jamison throughout her life. The proximity of his studio across the orchard from her own studio has undoubtedly resulted in significant influence in her development as a artist. Jamison’s landscape paintings are inspired by this ancient, wooded landscape; a place she has known her whole life. She uses oil and acrylic, on canvas or board, often working to a very large scale.

‘I attempt to capture the essence of my surroundings. I start with charcoal sketches on paper outside, to get a feel for what I am seeing. I find it helps me to get to know the place well, whether through walking or working in it. For me it is important to have an emotional and sense connection with a place, and that is what draws me in. There is a depth which I want to draw out, to capture. There is something in it; a story, even a history, that when I walk through a place I am gripped and held by the atmosphere it conveys. It is present; you don’t forget it.’
